Psychiatrists in this position will help address long-standing issues with access to mental health care in Michigan. They will also gain experience in the latest evidence based approaches to addressing inequities in access, including models of care where primary care providers remain responsible for patient treatment but psychiatrists and care managers support their efforts to address the needs of their clinic populations. Applicants will also be able to develop and shape a new tele-psychiatry program that will address geographic disparities in mental health treatment providers and resources.

The successful candidate will be also have a role in the Department’s General Ambulatory clinic and take an active role in mentoring fellows, residents, and medical students. This individual will also play a significant role in shaping our evolving clinical intake/assessment services and flow of patients throughout our care continuum both internal (within the department) and external (to primary care clinics) within Michigan Medicine. The candidate will join a dynamic group of psychiatrists partnering with a leadership team that values clinical and educational excellence and innovation. This position will report through the Ambulatory Psychiatry Medical Director.

Clinical Activity

Clinical activity will include an expectation of 70% clinical service through consultations to primary care teams, tele-psychiatry and clinical care of patients in the Adult Psychiatry Clinics. Approximately 10-20% of effort will be resident/fellow/staff clinic or consultation supervision; and 10-20% will be academic/scholarly activity.

The candidate will also provide some hospital-based services, entailing participation in various on-call activities, to include scheduled weekend rounding on the inpatient unit (averages 2 times per year) and backing up PES residents on call (6-7 nights per year).

Educational Activities

The successful candidate will serve as an on-site/directly available supervisor and preceptor for psychiatry house staff and medical students, and provide didactic lectures for primary care and specialty care colleagues, medical students, general psychiatry residents, child psychiatry fellows, and a broad range of health professionals and trainees (i.e; social work, psychology, pharmacy, nursing, etc.). The applicant will be welcomed and expected to share their expertise in core curriculum development/delivery, medical student teaching, Journal Clubs, Evidence-Based Medicine Seminars, and Grand Rounds.

The successful candidate will attend Faculty Meetings within the Department of Psychiatry and other meetings that build clinical collaboration, including Academic Staff, All-Staff, Physicians Meetings, and other meetings that build clinical community. The psychiatrist will address administrative work (e.g., electronic medical record and message monitoring, phone calls, letters, records, e-mails, etc.) in a timely manner, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to further improve the care provided by the department.

Required Qualifications

A doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy is required. Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary. Completion of a residency in Psychiatry is required, and the candidate must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry. Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration.
