We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate to coordinate and undertake work involved in the second phase of a larger programme of work on the EU-funded “SENSE-Cog” project. 


Phase I of the SENSE-Cog project involved the development phase of a toolkit of assessments, care pathways and tools adapted for people with concurrent vision, hearing and cognitive impairment, for use by professionals in various settings (psychiatry, audiology, optometry, primary care, nursing etc). The draft toolkit will be tested in a large clinical validation study (Phase II).   You will work with older adults with cognitive and/or sensory impairment, as well as a range of professionals from across different disciplines, including mental health, audiology, ophthalmology/optometry, psychology, medical statistics and occupational therapy. 


We are looking for an individual with a PhD in psychology, psychiatry, audiology, optometry, nursing, occupational therapy or related discipline relevant to the job description to join a lively environment Division of Neuroscience and Experimental Psychology. The main duties will be based in Manchester, however, it will be necessary to travel to other clinical sites on occasion (France, Cyprus and possibly Greece).


You should have demonstrable experience of carrying out clinical research to a high level and will have superb organisational skills. Ideally this would include systematically reviewing and synthesising the research and clinical literature and being able to write scientific manuscripts.


You will be actively responsible for the oversight, day-to-day running and management of the study, maintaining accurate and legible study-relevant documentation (written and electronic). You will have to supervise the activities of three RAs in six different sites (including two in France, one Cyprus and one in Greece) and be accountable to the study steering committee. A key task will be to deliver the study on time and to target in the 18 month validation study, which will be lead and coordinated by you in Manchester. Milestones and deliverables will have to be met. Thus, superior project organisation skills will be required, combined with excellent clinical research and people management skills.


You will have, or be expected to undertake, training in Good Clinical/Research Practice and Research Governance and Ethical issues.  You will be confident when dealing with research participants and their carers, displaying good communication skills and initiative, particularly in challenging or sensitive situations. You will liaise closely with clinicians, academics and professionals in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, geriatric medicine, audiology, occupational therapy, optometry and ophthalmology.
