The Centre for Children’s Burns and Trauma (CCBTR) is one of the leading burns and trauma research groups in Australia, lead by Professor Kimble, who is a burn surgeon and Director of Paediatric Trauma on the QLD Trauma Network. The CCBTR is a multidisciplinary team, comprised of researchers who are located in the Children’s Health Research Centre and in the Pegg Leditschke Paediatric Burns Centre at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital - one of the largest paediatric Burns Centres in Australasia.

The role
To determine the effectiveness of burn treatments for children and adults with burn scars, understanding needs to advance regarding the outcomes that are most important to patients, which outcomes are most sensitive to picking up changes in scarring, and what outcomes are clinically meaningful to patients with scars. Researchers within the CCBTR have developed a model that incorporates the outcomes that are important to patients and have completed a qualitative study of people with burn scars. From this work a new burn scar assessment has been developed, termed the Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile, which is a scar-specific assessment of health-related quality of life. The proposed project will involve testing the Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile using existing data and new data collected from children and adults with burns and other scar types. Although the Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile was developed for people with burn scars it may also be relevant for other people with scars. Thus the project will also investigate the content validity of the measure for people with other scar types. The work will also involve quantitative sensory testing, ultrasound measurement of scar thickness and the administration of questionnaires regarding stress responses and emotional reactions to further determine the importance of sensory and emotional experiences to patients and the ability of chosen measures to detect changes. The successful applicant will work with world class researchers from The University of Queensland as well as with clinical staff within the Pegg Leditschke Paediatric Burns Centre at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

The person
We are seeking a dynamic, intelligent, highly motivated PhD candidate who preferably has completed their basic qualification in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, or psychology and has experience working in their area of expertise. Experience working with children, conducting interviews and/or research experience is highly desirable, but not essential. The ability to enroll in a PhD full-time during data collection is also highly desirable. The successful applicant will be required to obtain a blue card to work with children. Applicants must be eligible to enrol in a PhD with the University of Queensland. For a complete list of the University of Queensland‘s minimum entry requirements please refer to: http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/our-research-degrees. Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong desire to subsequently develop a successful and highly-productive research or clinical career in children’s health research.
