RECRUITMENT PERIOD

Open November 29th, 2018 through December 27th, 2018

DESCRIPTION

An Assistant Researcher position is currently available in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This full-time (100%) position is located within the groups of Dr. Michael Fanselow, whose research uses rodent models with genetic, viral, pharmacological, and surgical manipulations to study the neurobiology of fear-, anxiety-, and stress-related behavior, basic mechanisms of learning & memory, and animal behavior from an etho-experimental perspective, and Dr. Chris Giza, whose neurotrauma research focuses on how traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects neural plasticity across the lifespan. The candidate will integrate the expertise across these two labs and will focus on investigating how aspects of traumatic brain injury affect stress processes, fear learning, and other dimensions of psychological health in a preclinical model. The successful candidate will work on multiple projects. One project will investigate changes in mechanisms of sensory sensitivity from TBI and how they impact neural circuitry known to be involved in fear learning and memory. Another project will involve how TBI affects aspects of regulatory and autonomic function and how these impact and are impacted by behavioral trauma (fear conditioning). Other projects will involve TBI, fear, sex differences, and duration of stress exposure. The candidate will also supervise a staff research associate involved in these research projects. Major duties include: guiding research projects through experimental design, conduct of experiments, and analysis of data; maintaining detailed documentation of the experimental work; supervising and mentoring students and researchers; presenting data within and outside of the research group at meetings and symposia; and writing, editing, and submitting manuscripts/abstracts detailing the results of the project.

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience with a minimum of 5 years experience as a postdoctoral researcher. Extensive experience with the following techniques is required: associative and nonassociative learning models, fear conditioning assays, anxiety and depression assays, stereotactic intracranial surgery, models of TBI including controlled cortical impact and fluid percussion injury, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, acute brain slice preparation. A deep understanding of the neurobiological cascade of TBI, stress and chronic stress, learning theory, molecular, cellular, circuit, and systems-level mechanisms of memory formation as well as data analysis and statistics is also required. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to: plan long-term timelines, coordinate multiple projects, conduct and document experiments in an organized fashion, supervise research staff at numerous stages of the research process, apply for intra and extramural research funding, effectively relay scientific findings through both oral and written communication.

As this position is contingent upon available funding, it is for a one year period with the possibility for extension if further funds become available.
