PhD Candidate: ‘Cultural Sensitivity in Prevention of Mental Health Problems of Children’

Faculty of Social Sciences

Vacancy number: 24.04.19

Application deadline: 3 February 2019

You will execute the qualitative research part of the project ‘Effects of an early intervention approach to improve the accessibility of mental health care and reduce mental health problems amongst vulnerable (ethnic minority) youth’. A fellow PhD candidate will conduct the quantitative part of this research.

The central research question is: Which elements of the early intervention approach (De School Als Vindplaats; DSAV) make it inclusive for vulnerable youth (with various problems, ethnic and SES backgrounds and gender identities)? In addition, together with the other PhD, you will provide input in a forecasting exercise (using the ‘effect calculator’), to estimate which future cost reductions can be achieved with DSAV.

Your tasks will be to answer the research question by extensively interviewing mental health care professionals, teachers, and particularly vulnerable children and their families, and by observing some interventions. To be able to do this, you will have to be pro-active in finding and convincing sufficient numbers of research participants. Moreover, you will write scientific articles, participate in conferences, seminars and other scholarly activities, contribute to teaching, and complete a PhD dissertation within four years.

Work environment

The research project is part of the research programme of Radboud Social and Cultural Research (RSCR), which brings together the disciplines of sociology, anthropology and development studies as well as gender and diversity studies. The successful applicant will be appointed to the chair group of Gender and Diversity Studies.

  • duration of the contract: 4 years;

  • as part of the contract, you will participate in teaching for approximately 10% of your work time;
