Duties and Responsibilities


We are seeking an experienced research fellow familiar with mixed-methods research, co-design methodology and is able to work in acute hospitals. The aim of the project is to develop and test the feasibility of a simple, acceptable, and practical intervention to support acute hospital staff and family carers in identifying discomfort, pain and distress, maximising comfort (and thus wellbeing) and reducing behaviours that challenge or are distressing to people with dementia who are in an acute hospital for assessment, treatment, or care, and may not be able to communicate their needs. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD. If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,922 - £32,607 per annum inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

 

The post is for 17 months.


Key Requirements


This is an exciting post which gives the opportunity to work with the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research department and the UCL Division of Psychiatry and department of primary care and population health to work on the NIHR RfPB -funded Improving care in acute hospitals: development and feasibility study of rules- of -thumb to promote comfort and decrease distress (DeCoDe-H) project.

 

As part of this study the post holder will be expected to set-up, and manage the day to day running of the study supervised and supported by Dr Elizabeth Sampson and Dr Nathan Davies. In particular they will be expected to: help prepare documents and gain ethical and regulatory approvals, recruit and collect mixed-methods data from people with dementia, hospital staff and family carers, data entry, conducting semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, organise and facilitate co-design workshops and focus groups which will inform the design of the educational package.
