Job Summary

Position Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member with expertise in adult Anxiety Disorders.  We seek a motivated psychiatrist to join one of the country’s first and largest Anxiety Clinics, now evaluating ~500 new patients each year and offering state-of-the-art psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments.  Interest and skills in both research and clinical care is imperative, though the balance can be adapted to individual strengths.  Specific interests can focus on any of the anxiety disorders (and, yes, we still consider OCD to be an anxiety disorder), and research foci can involve neuroimaging, psychoneuroendocrinology, genetics and genomics, sleep, clinical trials (using meds and/or psychotherapy), health services research, and substance abuse (all areas in which the department has existing expertise and willing collaborators and mentors).  We are also open to developing new areas of foci and expertise.  The ideal candidate will already be building a substantive research portfolio in some anxiety-related domain, with evidence of an ability to garner independent research funding.

In addition to research, there are opportunities for development as an educator, clinician, and administrative leader.

This position will report through the Anxiety Clinic Program Director (Dr. Abelson, who has run the Program for 22 years, following 18 years of leadership by George Curtis, MD).

Clinical Activities

We encourage all members of our Anxiety Program to become active participants on our highly vibrant, inter-disciplinary clinical team (with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, and trainees from all disciplines).  We expect some level of involvement in this clinical operation, including supervision of psychiatry residents rotating in the Anxiety Clinic.  The precise distribution of effort between clinical, research and educational activities is open to negotiation and impacted by research funding, but 15-20% effort in clinical care is typical.   There are opportunities for development in clinical leadership as well.  All of our faculty members also provide a small amount of hospital-based clinical services, including scheduled weekend rounding on our inpatient unit (averages 2-3 times per year) and telephone back-up to our residents doing night call in our Psychiatry Emergency Services (6-7 nights per year, from home).

Educational Activities

Primary educational duties involve staffing and supervising psychiatry residents in the Anxiety Clinic. There are also opportunities to provide didactics in our resident core as well as opportunities to help train our social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

All faculty participate in routine administrative activities (e.g., attending Academic Staff, All-Staff, team meetings).  There will also be opportunities for administrative/leadership development for those interested and appropriately skilled.

Required Qualifications

Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are desired.
