We are

The Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) is a multidisciplinary research institute and one of three research institutes within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. Our researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science and communication science. Our mission is to strengthen people through understanding the foundations of human behavior, by creating synergy between different paradigms and by facilitating craftsmanship, curiosity and connection in scientific research. We aim at being a key player in understanding and measuring human behaviour by conducting fundamental research, and at applying this fundamental knowledge in order to influence behavior.

BSI has seven research programmes covering three major research themes: 1) development and learning, 2) psychopathology, health and well-being, and 3) social processes and communication. BSI conducts fundamental research as well as applied/translational research.

BSI is a KNAW-acknowledged research school providing excellent research facilities and high-quality training for PhD candidates. It has state-of-the-art research facilities for observational studies, experiments, eye-tracking studies, EEG and other physiological measures, and behavioural measurements in real and virtual 3D environments. The neuroimaging facilities of the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (fMRI, MEG and TMS) are available for research on the neural bases of behaviour. For more information, please visit our website.

You wil work in BSI's Developmental Psychopathology group. The Developmental Psychopathology programme studies how individual characteristics (e.g. personality, cognitions, emotions, behaviour, genes, neurobiological processes, and hormones) and environmental and social factors (e.g. peers, parents, and schools) interact to influence the development of a range of psychopathologies as well as typical development. There are several core topics that we investigate, including internalising problems (e.g. depressive symptoms and loneliness), externalising problems (e.g. conduct disorder and callous unemotional traits), eating and lifestyle behaviours, substance use (e.g. alcohol, smoking, and drugs), well-being, effects of trauma and stressors on development, and the development of prosocial and antisocial behaviours. We also study typical behaviour and factors that facilitate resilience and (positive) well-being. We have a young, collaborative, enthusiastic, multidisciplinary team, consisting of 10 staff members and a large group of PhD candidates.

The teaching institute of Pedagogical Sciences and Educational Sciences (in Dutch: Pedagogische Wetenschappen en Onderwijswetenschappen (PWO)), currently houses about 1,700 students. Its study programmes focus on questions about upbringing, education, learning, and the typical and atypical development of children, adolescents, and adults. PWO makes a strong connection between science and pedagogical and educational practice (scientist practitioner training). The programmes are regularly assessed as excellent by students.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is the largest faculty at Radboud University. The Faculty's ambition is to be one of the top social science institutes in Europe, providing high-quality research and study programs that rank among the best in the Netherlands.
