Summary Description

The Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University and NYS Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Neurobiology (in Psychiatry). The Assistant Professor will be appointed as faculty member of the Area of Neuroscience, specifically under the Division of Neuroscience. In this context, you will work with the Columbia and NYSPI faculty to develop and implement a research program relevant to Neurosciences.
Basic Function
The purpose of this job is establishing an outstanding research program that focuses on understanding mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases via studying normal and abnormal brain connectivity. You are also expected to bring substantial outside funding to support the research program. The position requires extensive experience in behavioral research using mice, personal skills to interface with PIs and train staff, and organizational skills to ensure the smooth operation of the facility.

Key Responsibilities

-Research and grant proposal writing
-Interfacing with PIs to develop or import new experiments in new ways
-Teaching and mentoring graduate and postdoctoral students
-Advising on study design and data analysis
-Maintaining/troubleshooting equipment and tests, coordinating users within the facility, tracking quantitative and qualitative metrics and service fees.

Minimum Degree Required

MD and/or PhD and at least four years of research experience in the field of Alzheimer’s disease related conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Of particular interest are applicants who are using electrophysiology/imaging and optogenetic approaches to unravel mechanisms of major brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions. Demonstrated ability to attract independent grant support is another selection criterion.
