Position Title : Assistant Professor - Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy

Position Summary :

The Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching, advising and research, principally in the Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy program, and for supporting the ministry and mission of Martin Luther University College.

Martin Luther University College (formerly Waterloo Lutheran Seminary) is seeking qualified candidates to apply for this full-time position (limited-term, with potential for renewal). Applicants should have an earned doctoral degree, an excellent teaching record, significant clinical experience in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy, published research, and a proven ability to be a collaborative team player.

Luther is a theological school in Waterloo, Ontario, affiliated with Wilfrid Laurier University (Laurier). With over 175 students, Luther offers theological graduate programs including the Master of Divinity; Master of Arts in Theology with fields in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy, and Christian Studies; a provincially approved PhD in Human Relationships, with fields in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy and Pastoral Leadership; and a small undergraduate program in Christian Studies and Global Citizenship.

The Department of Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy has four full-time faculty, one part-time Associated Professional Faculty, and eleven Adjunct (sessional) Faculty. This department normally offers 36 different courses related to counselling over three terms (Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer) in a variety of formats, including traditional, blended week-long or all-day intensives, and some online courses. Five years ago, Luther opened the Delton Glebe Centre, which serves as a counselling center for the community and nearby universities, as well as a centre for teaching and research. It is named for Dr. Delton Glebe, who led Luther’s efforts as an early pioneer in the field Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy. Luther enjoys numerous partnerships with hospitals and agencies across Southwestern Ontario.

Founded in 1911, over its one hundred year history Luther was the institution that gave birth to Wilfrid Laurier University and to the University of Waterloo. It is part of the Laurier Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Degrees for Luther academic programs are granted by Wilfrid Laurier University. The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance accredit Luther’s graduate programs. For more information please go to


Accountabilities :

Teach a maximum of five courses/year as assigned by the Principal-Dean

Advise student doctoral dissertations and sit on student doctoral dissertation committees

Advise students in academic progress and vocational direction

Engage in research and publication that advances developments in the field of Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy, as well as theology more broadly

Serve on Luther and Laurier Committees as assigned by the Principal-Dean

Participate in the community life of Luther including planning and leading worship

Relate to other Laurier departments, schools and partners to identify, develop and support cooperation in academic programs, research and cross-disciplinary collaboration

Work with churches, faith communities and community agencies

Comply with the expectations and obligations outlined in the Luther Faculty manual

Undertake other tasks as agreed upon with the Principal-Dean


Qualifications :

Experience in graduate-level teaching in the field of Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy

Minimum of five years of clinical experience in the field of Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy; supervisory experience an asset

An earned doctoral degree, preferably PhD

Certification with appropriate associations, including registration (or qualifications to successfully register) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario (CRPO),

Proven ability to undertake research and publish in peer-reviewed forums

Experience in developing creative and student-centered courses utilizing various pedagogical approaches

Experience in curriculum development and program mapping using an outcomes-based approach

A working knowledge of computer software and Online Learning Delivery Systems

Understanding of and ability to work with churches and faith communities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

Excellent problem-solving skills and strategic planning

Excellent administrative and organizational skills

The capacity to understand and apply University policies and procedures and the ability to apply them accurately

Ability to take initiative and to work independently and collaboratively

Ability to participate constructively as a faculty team member and actively contribute to the broader vision of Luther


Salary Notes : Term of Appointment: This is initially a limited-term appointment with an initial three-year contract. It carries the option of being transferred into a tenure-track appointment following the first contract.


Compensation: To be negotiated within parameters of the Luther pay scale
