The School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work (NMSW) was established in 2015, as a result of the merging of the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Social Work and Human Services. The School is a leader in the study of nursing, midwifery, social work and counselling, demonstrating excellence through innovative, creative, and dynamic teaching and research, in a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and engaging environment. The School is committed to conducting academic, research and community partnership programs that are recognised for their excellence in contributing to health and well-being in the community. The School is responsible for the Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery dual degree, Master of Nursing Studies, Master of Social Work Studies and the Master of Counselling degrees. It has extensive, well-established partnerships in the hospital, health care, social welfare and disability sectors and a developing cohort of research higher degree students.


In the most recent QS world rankings by subject area nursing, University of Queensland (UQ) was ranked 21st in the World, 4th in Australia and number 1 in Queensland. In the most recent Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) ratings UQ received the maximum rating of 5 (“Well above World Standard”) in Nursing, including midwifery and Social Work. UQ was the only Australian University to achieve that rating in the discipline of social work.

About This Opportunity


In this teaching-focused position, you will principally contribute to the teaching and learning within the Master of Counselling Program. Your responsibilities will span across teaching, student placement, developing and implementing course material, and providing consultation and support to students.


This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.


Our Ideal Candidate


To be successful, you will be able to demonstrate:


  • PhD (or progression toward PhD completion) in Counselling or a related field;
  • Ability and enthusiasm for developing and engaging in high-quality teaching content within the Counselling field;
  • Experience in course coordination;
  • Ability to bring together high levels of discipline-related expertise and pedagogical content knowledge; and
  • Capacity to take an active role in obtaining funding to support projects and fellowships.

This is a full-time, continuing position at Academic level A. The base salary will be in the range $67,542 - $90,982, plus super of up to 17%.
