The Faculty of Medicine promotes scientific research of a high standard and is responsible for providing research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics, as well as for the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine. In addition to its teaching and research activities, the Faculty serves as a significant expert organisation in the healthcare sector and contributes to the discourse on ethics in the field. In terms of research, the Faculty aims for a place among the best medical faculties in the world, while consolidating and strengthening its status as a top-level institution of medical education. Together with Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) and the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE), the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, constitutes the Academic Medical Center Helsinki (AMCH). The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR The field of the position is Orthopaedics and Traumatology. The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage. An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. When considering applicant’s qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience. An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, the applicant for the professorship must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The assistant professor/associate professor/professor will be responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education together with the other professor in the field. The professor also participates in practical small group teaching and in lecture-based teaching. The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following related developments in research, and participating in community relations and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the department. The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist’s degree or licence in the field. The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position. The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities.
