What You Will Do
We are looking to appoint a Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor to lead the University of Canterbury’s prestigious Child and Family Psychology programme (the rank of Associate Professor in New Zealand is broadly equivalent to that of ‘Reader’ in the United Kingdom and ‘Full Professor’ (non-Chair) in North America). The appointment includes a permanent professorial post, as well as the role of Programme Director for a three-year renewable term. The position may be offered at the lower level without the directorship where appropriate.

The successful candidate will be an internationally recognised scholar and researcher in a relevant field of child and family psychology (such as clinical child psychology). They will also be a highly experienced practitioner, who will be dedicated to the leadership task of preparing future Psychologists for Aotearoa New Zealand. The successful candidate will share our programme’s philosophical emphasis on cross-sectoral, inter-disciplinary and culturally-sensitive practice, within a scientist-practitioner framework.
Who You Are
You will have significant international professional standing in your areas of clinical specialty and a record of distinction in research and scholarship consistent with appointment at the level of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor.

The position’s essential selection criteria are:
• A doctoral degree (PhD) in Psychology or other relevant discipline
• Research and scholarship in a field relevant to child and family psychological practice, that has international standing
• Registered to practice as a Psychologist in New Zealand under an appropriate scope, or (for overseas applicants) be eligible for registration in New Zealand
• Considerable post-registration experience as a Psychologist working with children, adolescents and/or families
• Relevant university teaching experience (notably on a post-graduate training programme that culminates in registration / licensure to practice as a Psychologist)
• Experience in supervising Doctoral and Masters-level research
• Experience in effective team leadership and successfully mentoring and supporting junior colleagues and students
Who You Will Work With
The Child and Family Psychology Programme encompasses a three-year postgraduate training scheme, commencing with an open-entry Masters degree (MSc, MA, MEd), followed by a limited-entry Postgraduate Diploma in Child and Family Psychology. The diploma leads to registration as a Psychologist with the New Zealand Psychologists’ Board. This is a cross-sectoral programme that aims to equip psychologists to work with children and families in varied settings, including Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Paediatrics, Education, Child Welfare (including alternate care and adoption), Disability Services, and various types of non-government children’s services. The programme is unique to New Zealand and Australia, and is one of only a few of its kind in the world. The programme also operates the Pukemanu Centre, a state-of-the art university training clinic that offers considerable scope for carrying out clinical and applied developmental research with children, parents and families.
