Job Description:
The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for an Assoc Project Scientist / Project Scientist. The mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. Critical to this mission are community education and outreach activities, development and delivery of educational presentations, marketing and communications, and developing and maintaining community relationships and partnerships. Additionally, UCI MIND engages in novel science of recruitment to instruct the field in how best to accelerate discoveries in clinical research.

The successful candidate will be immediately responsible for 1) performing research on research recruitment and retention; 2) analyzing data, writing, editing, and submitting work to peer reviewed journals; 3) managing all UCI MIND community education/outreach activities, including planning/oversight of the annual research conferences; 4) development/delivery of additional community educational presentations; 5) managing all UCI MIND marketing/communications (i.e., social media, mailings, email, website); 6) developing and maintaining community relationships and partnerships; 7) serving in an editorial capacity for UCI MIND newsletters, website, and social media; and 8) overseeing junior staff members and trainees.

Successful candidates must have graduate training (PhD or similar doctorate) in Neuroscience, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related area. We are especially interested in applicants with proficiency in the following areas:

• Knowledge of dementia in its different forms
• Ability to independently develop the content and creatively format presentations regarding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to make them both understandable and attractive to audiences
• Demonstrated interest in working with the older people and people with cognitive impairment
• Knowledge of Orange County community organizations committed to service for people with dementia
• Experience in data collection and analysis for documenting education outcomes, including, but not limited to, attendance, evaluations, and recruitment of research participants
• Strong writing skills, including scientific writing and writing for lay audiences
• Ability to establish and maintain accurate files and records
• Experience in developing and cultivating new community and professional contacts primarily in the Alzheimer’s disease and dementia profession
• Experience representing the mission and programs of an organization in public venues (e.g., health fairs)
• Public speaking experience
• Experience describing the benefits of Alzheimer’s disease research participation to the public and successfully facilitating enrollment

Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential. The ability to communicate in non-English languages would be viewed favorably. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
