Description

The Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/vchs/) pursues a tripartite mission of innovative research, education, and clinical care in a highly diverse environment. The Health Sciences at UC San Diego is committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and seeks to foster an inclusive environment where we can address the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

The T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy & Compassion was established at UC San Diego through a generous gift from South Dakota businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford. The Institute will undertake three ambitious aims: explore the neurobiology of compassion; transform the medical education curriculum; and address the epidemic of physician burnout.

As a key component of the Sanford Institute, the Center for Interpersonal Communication seeks to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes by enhancing interpersonal communication between physicians and patients, and address physician burnout through didactic and experiential communication training. The Center will also collaborate with other Centers within the Sanford Institute to produce research and data on outcomes associated with the implementation of communication training at UC San Diego.

The Sanford Institute invites applications for the Director of the Center for Interpersonal Communication. Jointly reporting to the Director of the Center for Mentorship and Communication in Medicine and the Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Director will support the Centers’ internal and external activities. This role will lead activities to develop and launch the new Center, including establishing communication standards for physician-patient interactions; developing a system-wide educational curriculum; leading training sessions and other activities to promote best practices; and serve as an advisor to physicians and leaders across the enterprise on empathetic interpersonal communication and effective patient-provider relationships. In collaboration with Health Sciences and Department leadership, the Director will ensure that activities are well-integrated and applicable to the clinical setting. The Director will be expected to ensure alignment with the mission and goals of T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, and foster strong collaborations with its other Center Directors.

UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research, and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. As with similar roles, the Director is expected to abide by UC San Diego’s Principles of Community, including in the areas of recruitment, diversity, service, and other policies and regulations.

Required Qualifications:

• Doctoral degree. Candidates with an MD or equivalent must have certification and be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.
• Outstanding academic record with experience in administration in an academic medical center environment.
• Demonstrated experience with the successful development of curriculum and/or training programs for physicians, leaders, and other clinical team members.
• Expertise in communication, empathy, compassion, or mindfulness research and/or training.
• History of fostering collaborations with faculty and leaders across multiple disciplines.
• Personal record of distinguished scholarly, research (basic and/or translational), and/or clinical accomplishments

Preferred Qualifications:

• Leadership experience within an academic department, division, and/or professional society.
• National or international prominence in the candidate’s field of expertise.
• Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the Health Sciences.

The Director of the Center for Interpersonal Communication at UC San Diego Health Sciences is considered at-will. This position will have annual performance reviews with a formal committee review every fifth year.

The appropriate series and appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor Rank based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Series will include HS Clin, Clinical X and Adjunct.
