The Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences (GMW) is a knowledge center that focuses on people. The faculty deals with issues concerning people as individuals, the mutual relationships of people and society as a whole. Psychological research within the Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences is housed in the Heymans Institute.

The faculty strives for a leading position in researching and solving social issues and problems that people experience in their daily lives. Our ambition is to develop and evaluate scientifically supported interventions, in consultation with social parties. We want to expand the faculty infrastructure for empirical scientific research to an international top level.

 

Within the Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology unit, research is conducted into patients with neurological disorders, developmental disorders and visual disorders. The research focuses on the nature of these disorders, on the effects of treatments and on the consequences of these disorders for participation in society.

 

Job description

The proposed research focuses on the scanning behavior of people with hemianopsia. Hemianopsia is a form of visual field loss and one of the most common consequences of a stroke or other brain injury in the back of the brain. In order to obtain all the necessary visual information, people with hemianopsia must adjust their viewing behavior to compensate for their visual field loss. This adjustment often does not occur automatically, which can lead to difficulties in daily life in the areas of mobility, reading and searching in particular. Fortunately, the rehabilitation options are increasing and various viewing training courses have been developed. In these viewing training sessions it is of great importance to be able to inform clients about how their scanning behavior is related to certain problems they experience in daily life and how they can improve their scanning behavior to reduce these problems. New techniques such as eye movement measurements, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) make it possible to accurately map the scan behavior. In the project, prototypes that use these techniques are further developed into methods that can be used in rehabilitation. The aim is to use these methods to investigate the relationship between scan behavior (how someone views the environment) and various activities (mobility, searching, reading) in people with hemianopsia, visually impaired people and visionaries with simulated hemianopsia. The acquired knowledge about efficient and targeted viewing behavior will improve the rehabilitation for people with hemianopsia. The available knowledge about which scanning behavior is optimal is now mainly based on the experiences and assumptions of care professionals, but is insufficiently founded on literature or systematically collected data.

 

Within this research there is close collaboration with Koninklijke Visio, center of expertise for blind and visually impaired people. The majority of the data collection takes place in Groningen / Haren, but measurements will also be taken at a number of other locations of Koninklijke Visio. There is also close collaboration with the Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology at the UMCG. An external company develops the VR and AR environments on behalf of the project group.

 

Your duties as a researcher include:

• writing scientific journal articles with an academic dissertation as the ultimate goal

• conducting literature research to find out what is already known about the scan behavior of visually impaired people and people with hemianopsia for different tasks

• submitting ideas adjustments to the measurement methods and data collection based on the literature studied and experience gained

• the collection and analysis of the data (including the analysis of eye movement data).

 

Furthermore, your function consists of following compulsory and optional education, project management tasks, presenting the research results at national and international conferences and providing education at the faculty.

 

Qualifications

You are intrinsically motivated to do scientific research in a clinical setting

no later than September 2019 you have a Masters degree in Psychology, Biomedical Technology, Artificial Intelligence or an equivalent scientific education relevant to this project

it is important that you have good social and clinical skills; in this study you will come into contact with patients with a neurological disorder that can have a major impact on the quality of life and social participation

it is important that you have an independent work attitude, that you can plan well and that you can also work together in a multidisciplinary team; in this research you work together with healthcare professionals, technicians, other researchers and students

you have demonstrable affinity with conducting and reporting research and working with and (statistically) analyzing large data sets

experience with collecting and analyzing eye movement data is not necessary, but it is an advantage; experience with developing VR and AR environments is also not necessary, but it is an advantage

you can communicate excellently in Dutch and in English, both orally and in writing; we also think it is important that you can properly explain your research to a general audience.

Conditions of employment

We offer in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities:

 

a salary, depending on education and experience, from a minimum of € 2,325 gross per month in the first year to a maximum of € 2,972 gross per month in the last appointment year at full working time

a holiday allowance of 8% and 8.3% year-end bonus and flexible secondary employment conditions via the Employment Conditions Selection Model

a temporary appointment of 1.0 FTE for a total of four years that must be concluded by means of an individual dissertation. You will first receive a one-year appointment. Your performance will be assessed within that year and if the suitability turns out, the appointment will be extended by the remaining part of the process.
