Doctoral student in Cognitive Science within the project The Evolution of Minds

The PhD position is placed within the multidisciplinary international project The Evolution of Minds: 325 million years of intelligence studied with neuroscience, cognitive zoology and paleontology. The PhD position is in cognitive science in the Cognitive Zoology group, but the candidate will collaborate with international neuroanatomists and paleontologists. The project aims at exploring evolutionary principles of cognition by studying the Sauropsida lineage with living animals, their brains and with fossils of extinct species.

The PhD project will investigate the cognition in palaeognath birds, crocodilians and various non-archosaur reptiles. The studies will focus on fundamental cognitive functions such as behavioural inhibition, object cognition, memory and learning.

The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council (Interdisciplinary Research Environment Grant) and led from the department.

Additional requirements:

- A thesis on master level, or its equivalent, in animal cognition or an adjacent field, or a scientific paper within the discipline.

- Documented scientific work experience with either non-archosaur reptiles, crocodilians or palaeognath birds.

A background that, except from cognitive science, also includes either neuroanatomy or paleontology is meritorious. A background in cognitive science with focus on any of the above-mentioned taxa is particularly meritorious.

Assessment criteria

The selection process will primarily take into account the applicants’ ability to benefit from third cycle studies. This is assessed against the criteria quality, quantity, progression and relevance.

The application must include:

- CV/list of qualifications including relevant administrative and educational qualifications

- cover letter

- records of first- and second-cycle studies (attested copies of official transcripts of records)

- documentation of language skills of relevance for the research studies

- first- and second-cycle theses/degree projects

- any scholarly publications

- project proposal (1500 words max. excluding references)

About The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology

The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have around 700 employees and around 4000 students.

The Department of Philosophy has about 70 employees. Research and education at the department is conducted within three subjects: Cognitive science, Practical philosophy and Theoretical philosophy.
