Junior Specialist, Canzio Laboratory, Weill Institute for Neurosciences University of California San Francisco, Department of Neurology United States

DESCRIPTION

The Canzio Laboratory seeks a Junior Specialist to join the Department of Neurology and the Weill Institute for Neurosciences at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus. Our focus is on understanding the mechanism of generating neural cell surface identity by the Protocadherin (Pcdh) gene cluster. Pcdh proteins play a central role in neural circuit assembly, and have been implicated in neurological diseases, such as autism. Understanding the details of Pcdh gene regulation will not only provide the opportunity to discover fundamental insights into novel mechanisms of eukaryotic gene expression, but also lead to a better understanding of the genetic basis of neurological diseases.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Daniele Canzio, the Junior Specialist will assist with a wide range of experiments using standard techniques in the area of specialty assigned such as:

  • Molecular biology: RNA and DNA extractions, cloning, library preparation for next-generation sequencing, real-time PCR, DNA sequencing analysis, immunoblotting, site-directed mutagenesis, and western blotting
  • Cell Culture: maintenance of cell lines and performing in vitro cell based assays
  • Maintenance of mouse colonies: basic mouse husbandry including breeding, weaning, genotyping, maintaining a mouse inventory and regular monitoring of health statuses of mice
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date and well-documented records of procedures performed and data generated. Summarize results and assist in interpreting findings

Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related discipline with at least one year of laboratory experience and experience with cell culture and/or mouse husbandry. We especially seek applicants who possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills; strong laboratory bench skills; the ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, and follow instructions; and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Candidates must possess the required qualifications by the time of the appointment.

Applicants must apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/apply/JPF02261, with a cover letter, CV, and three reference letters. Applications received outside the online process cannot be considered, but informal inquiries can be directed to Dr. Daniele Canzio at danielecanzio@gmail.com.

UCSF seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status.
