Lab Specialist in Speech Neuroscience
University of California San Francisco, Department of Neurology
United States

DESCRIPTION

Job Description: The UCSF Speech Neuroscience Lab seeks to appoint an Associate Specialist researcher to join our team in investigations of the role of auditory feedback in speech production. Ongoing projects involve running functional neuroimaging experiments based on magnetoencephalography (MEGI) to look at cortical activation during speaking tasks, and developing computational simulations of a model of speech motor control to compare with experiment results.

We are most interested in self-driven individuals who are motivated to learn more about the neural bases of speech production. The ideal candidate would have strong research interests in speech motor control and some familiarity with current models, have experience with organizing and conducting functional imaging studies (especially those based on MEGI), and work well with others involved in these studies. The ideal candidate would also have extensive experience writing programs in Matlab to analyze the data collected in the studies, and also have experience writing up results for publication and presentation at conferences. A minimum two year commitment is required.

Job Responsibilities:
• Assist with the design of functional imaging experiments based on MEGI
• Recruit subjects for participation in the experiments
• Organize and conduct the MEGI functional imaging experiments
• Analyze data from the experiments using Matlab
• Assist with the interpretation of experiment results
• Write up experiment results for publication
• Present experiment results at conferences

Education:
• Ph.D. in academic discipline relevant to the neuroscience of speech (e.g., Neuroscience, Cognitive Science)

Experience:
• At least two years’ experience conducting functional imaging experiments and analyzing the resulting data.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Specific experience running MEGI-based studies and experience with Matlab programming and statistical methods.

Additional Qualifications for the position are:
• Ability to work well with others
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to independently solve problems with minimal supervisory intervention

Licensure/Certification/Registration:
• None required.

Physical Requirements:
• The position requires the ability to assist subjects into and out of the MEG scanner.
