The George Mason University Department of Psychology invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor position, ideally beginning in the Fall 2019 semester. The position is to support the forensic psychology program, which currently offers a minor for non-psychology majors and a concentration for psychology majors. This program is our fastest-growing program. Started just 3 years ago, it now has nearly 300 students. The Department of Psychology:

(https://psychology.gmu.edu/) has over 1,000 undergraduate majors and over 200 graduate students. We are one of the largest departments in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is the largest academic unit at George Mason. The Department has over 40 faculty members, including 7 instructional, non-tenure-track faculty positions. Non-tenure-track instructional faculty, who typically teach a default load of 4 courses/semester (unless receiving course releases for administrative duties) are vital to the department in their support of its instructional mission. They are expected to be fully familiar with research but are not expected to be research productive. Non-tenure-track faculty are fully integrated in the department, with full voting rights commensurate with rank and status and with similar access to resources, such as travel funds and professional development opportunities, as tenure-track faculty. Our Psychology Department is guided by three primary foci. First, the department is focused on fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels in our department and, more broadly, in our field. This mission is facilitated by our location in one of the most diverse regions of the country and by George Mason’s status as the most diverse university in Virginia (https://www2.gmu.edu/about-mason/diversity-mason). Second, in line with George Mason’s Carnegie classification as a Research I university and its strategic goal of conducting research of consequence, our department focuses on being a prominent center for translational research. In our undergraduate program, we emphasize empirical research as the basis of knowledge in our field, and have a thriving Honors Program. Third, we focus strongly on doctoral student training, which includes an emphasis on training students as instructors in the context of our undergraduate instruction.

 

 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate courses in forensic psychology, both in-person and online, as well as other undergraduate courses that fit within the candidate’s area of expertise. The forensic psychology program is growing, and there may also be opportunities to contribute to the development of new courses at the undergraduate level or the post-baccalaureate level.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

We are looking for individuals with a doctorate in psychology (or a closely related field); a strong background in forensic psychology; a commitment to and demonstrated success in the education of a diverse undergraduate student body. Candidates who will have a doctorate conferred before the start of Fall 2019 classes will be considered eligible for this posting.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

We are particularly interested in candidates with broad experience in both in-person and online undergraduate education, and in candidates who can support the growth of our forensic psychology program. That growth includes the potential development of new undergraduate courses and the potential development of a post-baccalaureate certificate in forensic psychology for master’s-level mental health workers (e.g., licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors). In addition, we are keenly interested in candidates who have the ability to contribute to our culturally inclusive environment, in support of our highly diverse student body.
