Open Rank Faculty in Psychology
University of Houston, Department in Psychology
United States

The University of Houston College of Medicine (UHCOM) announces an open rank faculty position for a clinically prepared psychologist who desires an academic career. The majority of responsibilities for this position will be for teaching, curricular innovation and academic service; 25% of effort will be directed to clinical service. Applicants seeking appointment at full professor must be highly experienced in one or more of the educational areas described below in the form of development, implementation and scholarship.

An academic position such as this is a rare opportunity for psychologists. The appointment will be in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (DBSS). UHCOM is a new medical school preparing for its first class of students in August 2020. Its mission is to educate a diverse group of physicians who will provide compassionate, high value care to patients, families and communities. We seek to directly impact the health of our community. UHCOM leadership and faculty see biopsychosocial training and professional development of relationally oriented physicians as fundamental to our mission. DBSS is underway with curriculum development covering the full range of behavioral and social sciences knowledge, skills and attitudes from mental disorders, to health behavior, to communication, to teamwork, to student, provider and staff wellness. We see the doctor-patient relationship as potentially therapeutic and intend to prepare our graduates to have meaningful, effective and satisfying interactions with patients. The curriculum we are designing will be highly innovative, including flipping the classroom with a ratio of 35% didactic to 65% experiential activities.

UHCOM is a community-based medical school. The faculty psychologist will provide direct patient care at our new Community Health Center or a similar site.  We intend to lead in development and delivery of integrated behavioral health. The faculty psychologist should be capable of providing a generalist, evidence-based approach to evaluation and therapy, and highly interested in clinical teaching of trainees of all types.

Scholarly productivity is expected from our faculty. In addition to behavioral and social sciences, health systems and population medicine are a major of UHCOM. Together these bring a rich opportunity for curriculum development and health services research.  The University of Houston is a Carnegie Tier One Research University with more than 37,000 undergraduates.  Graduate clinical behavioral health training and innovative research offered by departments of clinical psychology, educational psychology, and social work offer ample opportunity for research as well.

This position will report directly to the Chair of Behavioral and Social Science Department. This is a non-tenure position at this time. UHCOM expects to begin implementation of a tenure system after preliminary LCME accreditation which is anticipated early 2020 with our first tenure lines opening by the end of 2020.
