The Department of Neurology of the Klinikum rechts der Isar Hospital of Munich Technical University has a focus on inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system with a particular interest in multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Research activities involve experimental models, clinical trials, imaging, biomarker, and genetic studies to better understand the pathophysiology of diseases, monitor and predict the disease course, and develop new treatment strategies. The investigator group “Biomedical Informatics in Systems Neuroscience” aims at the identification of proteomic biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid for the disease course and treatment response in patients with multiple sclerosis, to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying changes in the cerebrospinal fluid proteome with a strong focus on genetic factors and to develop prediction models for the disease course and treatment response in multiple sclerosis.

Your tasks:

-Integrate mass spectrometry data of more than 4000 patients with MS and other neurological diseases with genetic data (genome-wide SNP data, exome-wide sequencing data), epigenetic data (DNA methylation) and gene expression data from cerebrospinal fluid single cell analysis
-Perform quality control of genetic, and epigenetic data as well as for single cell gene expression data
-Perform genome-wide and exome-wide genetic association studies on clinically relevant phenotypes and CSF proteome changes, as well as differential expression analysis and calculation and evaluation of polygenic scores
-Perform epigenetic association analyses with clinically relevant phenotypes
-Perform colocalization analyses on genetic association signals and causality analyses (e.g. mendelian randomization, causal mediation analyses)

Your profile:

-You are a highly qualified and motivated student holding a (or being close to obtaining) M.Sc. or equivalent degree in genetics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, or related fields
-You have practical scientific expertise and a strong theoretical background in statistical genetics
-You have good programming skills in R or Python
-Ideally, you are familiar with PLINK and related tools and have a background in biomedical statistical analyses genotype data
-Ideally, you have experience in the application of inferential and exploratory statistical analyses, especially logistic and linear regression models
-You show a strong commitment, motivation, and discipline to work independently and efficiently
-You are a strong team player with the ability to work together with colleagues from various disciplines
-You show an excellent ability to communicate, present, and write in English
