PhD student for a Swiss National Science Foundation research project

As part of the project "A longitudinal study of emerging adults in Namibia" led by Dr. Amber Gayle Thalmayer. This may be the first large longitudinal test of psychological development in Africa; during these 4 years, we will launch the study, coordinate with collaborators in several countries, recruit participants in Namibia, and explore a number of variables relevant to personality, developmental, clinical, and social psychology, as well as psychologist assessment.

Your responsibilities

  • scientific tasks (literature review, questionnaire creation, data analysis)
  • technical tasks (programming online questionnaires for data collection, data cleaning)
  • team and leadership tasks (supervising Master's level and other research assistants, coordinating with colleagues, assistants, and participants in Namibia)
  • organizational, project management tasks (helping keep study on time and on budget)
  • writing and publishing results in academic journals
  • lectures at national and international congresses
  • obtain scientific qualification (PhD)

Your profile

Required Background:
  • BA and MA/MS degrees with major in psychology (or closely related field)
  • proof of successful research experience (e.g. MA thesis, internships, work as research assistant)
  • very good English language skills, including skill in writing
  • good knowledge of empirical/statistical methods (qualitative and/or quantitative)
  • good knowledge of computers and relevant programs (MS Office, SPSS, R)
Interests and motivation:
  • strong research interest in fields of personality, developmental, social, and/or cultural psychology
  • good German language skill or willingness to learn German
  • enthusiasm to learn new statistical (e.g. longitudinal analysis) and qualitative methods
  • interest in research visits to Namibia, cross-cultural experience & communication
  • commitment and motivation to publish scientific articles and obtain PhD
Useful personal characteristics:
  • skilled at working in a team: respectful, flexible, good communication skills
  • self-motivated and independent, good time management and organization
  • can accept and learn from feedback (from team members, peer reviewers, etc.)
