PhD Scholarship on Platform Workers in the Project the Digital Economy at Work, Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Employment Relations Research Centre (FAOS, Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen, with a focus on platform workers and the general labour market. Employment is expected to start on 1st of January 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarship is part of the research project “The Digital Economy at Work: Integration and Segmentation in Hybrid Labour Markets”, which is headed by Associate Prof Anna Ilsøe and Associate Prof. Trine P. Larsen. The PhD project examines platform workers and their career trajectories before and beyond working on the platform. Does platform work act as a stepping-stone or trap for the individual worker on the labour market? The project draws on quantitative research methods including quantitative analysis of admin register data and survey data. It is funded by The Velux Core Group Program (The Velux Foundations) and runs for the period 2020-2023.

Qualifications

The successful applicant is expected to have a

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in sociology or related social sciences,
  • Experience with working with administrative registers (such as the Danish Administrative Registers)
  • Proven skills in quantitative analysis of large data sets (regression analysis, latent class analysis etc.)
  • English language skills
  • Danish language skills

Previous experience in the field of labour market sociology is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Opportunities

The successful applicant will be part of the core group research team, which includes Associate Prof. Anna Ilsøe (PI), Associate Prof. Trine Larsen (PI), Associate Prof. Jakob Demant, Prof. Anne Helene Garde (The National Research Centre for the Working Environment, NFA), two PhD students and one student assistant. The Danish research team forms part of Nordic, European and international networks, which opens the opportunity to research visits abroad during the project.

PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.

Application

The application should include:

  • Project abstract (please fill in the project abstract in the application form. Must not exceed 1.200 characters)
  • Cover letter (detailing your motivation and background for applying for the specific PhD project)
  • Project description (maximum 2 pages not including bibliography): a description of the proposed research (aims, methods, expected outcomes) within the framework of the project description.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • Transcript of Master’s degree Diploma and grades.
  • Applicants who have not yet completed their Master’s degree, but who have submitted their thesis, must include documentation that the thesis is approved.

In order to be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enrol as a PhD student at the Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules of the Danish Ministerial order No 1039 of 27 August 2013.  In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme the applicant must have completed a two year MSc degree programme, or have earned 120 ECTS credits at an equivalent academic level before starting his or her employment.

Application process

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee.

The following criteria are used when shortlisting candidates for assessment:

1. Research qualifications as reflected in the description of the proposed research.

2. Quality and feasibility of the project.

3. Qualifications and knowledge in relevant Sociology disciplines.

4. Performance (grades obtained) in graduate and post-graduate studies.
