POST-DOCTORAL SCHOLAR: Psychology, Stress, & Physiological Functioning in the Context of Medical Education

The Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine has an opening for one post-doctoral research scholar (one year to 1.5 years). The position is open to start July, 2019.

The scholar will work closely and collaboratively with Dr. Sarah Pressman; her graduate
and undergraduate students; and several faculty in the department of emergency medicine, primarily Dr. Shannon Toohey and Dr. Alisa Wray. The scholar will primarily work on a DoD-funded project on how augmented reality technology can be utilized to produce better learning outcomes via more realistic emotional, stress, and
physiological responses. This study will utilize ambulatory psychophysiological monitoring (e.g., skin conductance and salivary biomarkers of stress), self-reported emotional responses, and learning outcome data. There are other archival data available, as well as the opportunity to collect data on topics connected to either emotion, health and stress (the Pressman lab) or medical education (with Drs. Toohey, Wray). Primary responsibilities of the scholar will include IRB preparation, oversight of some aspects of the project, data collection, data analysis, and co-authoring manuscripts with the investigators on this project. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in psychology or a closely related field before starting the position. ABD status is acceptable at the time of hiring, but the final degree must be completed by the start date.

Strong quantitative skills for longitudinal and multilevel data, oral and
especially written communication skills, and experience with psychophysiology, psychoneuroendocrinology, and/or ambulatory physiological assessments are desired. This is full-time position with benefits.
