At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy, research in large areas, from molecule to human, is conducted. The Institute has five sections; pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience and psychiatry and neurochemistry.

A postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology.

Subject area

Clinical Neuroscience

Subject area description

Within the subject Clinical Neuroscience, research is conducted to study brain function under physiological and pathological situations, as well as treatment of brain damage. The research areas focus on determining how different mechanisms, from molecules to other organs, work together. In the present application, cellular and molecular factors that play a role in brain development during the newborn period are studied using interdisciplinary approaches including bioinformatics to analyze biological data.

Job assignments

Work tasks include establishment of and follow up on routine analysis of target genomics data, especially massive parallel sequencing, but can also include proteomics data or large imaging data sets obtained from human subjects or tissues from animal research. You need to be able to rapidly familiarize with new software and, when needed, to write your own program code. A good understanding of biology and medicine is necessary in order to interpret data. As a bioinformatics data analyst, you will work in multiple projects created by researchers and clinicians, which require good social and communicative skills in both Swedish and English. In some projects you will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with application experts and data system engineers at the Core Facilities at University of Gothenburg.

Eligibility

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher in Bioinformatics in Neuroscience the applicant must have at PhD in Bioinformatics, Statistics or equivalent and have experience in Unix/Linux and R/Matlab, as well as any established scripting language (e.g. Python). You must have documented experience in experimental design and handling of high throughput data. You should be familiar with the overall workflow of genomic and proteomic data generation (from the processing of biological samples to data generation and validation) as well as with big-data storage resources (SweStore). Previous experience working in multidisciplinary environments is desirable. Postdoctoral positions constitute a qualifying appointment for junior researchers with a completed degree no more than three years prior to the application deadline.

Assessment

The work requires a high level of technical knowledge in bioinformatics.

Criteria for employment are prioritized as follows:

  1. Scientific skill. Of crucial importance is experience and competence in the specific research area as well as ability to handle and analyze data from large data sets. The work includes summarizing the results in scientific publications, which means that the applicant should have demonstrated scientific skills.

  2. Educational skills. Previous experience working in multidisciplinary environment and pedagogical skills are desirable.

  3. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability and on good communication skills, both Swedish and English language, both in speech and writing.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date; as soon as possible or as agreed.
