The Role

The Dementia Research Centre is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in stem cell bioengineering to establish and work with human and murine brain organoids for studying disease mechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative conditions. This work will integrate with ongoing research using genetically modified mouse models of human neurodegenerative conditions to understand and eventually treat these devastating diseases. The role will involve a degree of independency in experimental planning and execution, data analysis and reporting. The successful candidate will present the data at scientific conferences and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts towards publications in scientific journals.

About You:

You will have an in-depth knowledge of human stem cell technologies, including extensive experience with the methodology of generating induced pluripotent stem cells from donor fibroblasts, neuronal differentiation, and brain organoid generation. Exposure within functional and morphological analysis of organoids are essential. You will enjoy working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will also be an excellent communicator with high-quality interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

  • PhD in Biotechnology or a closely related discipline; ideally with a focus in stem cell bioengineering and regenerative medicine.
  • Proven experience in human stem cell technologies, including with the methodology of generating induced-pluripotent stem cells from donor fibroblasts, neuronal differentiation and brain organoid generation.
  • A strong record of contributions to peer reviewed publications and history of research excellence, relative to experience and opportunity.
  • Proven experience with high-end microscopy, such as light-sheet microscopy and confocal microscopy.
  • Proven experience in microfluidic technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to prepare reports and publish in high impact quality journals.
  • Proven ability to conduct research independently and as part of a team.
  • Computer skills including MS Office, research and database management and research software (such as EndNote).
  • Experience working in a research laboratory including knowledge of relevant regulations, ethics and guidelines.
