The Role

The Social Brain in Action Laboratory (SoBA Lab) and the Department of Psychology are currently seeking a suitably qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a research project directed towards understanding cognitive and brain mechanisms that support social perception and interaction.

The successful applicant will work with Dr. Richard Ramsey, as well as other faculty and researchers associated with the Departments of Psychology and Cognitive Science to:

  • Design and conduct research experiments, analyse secondary datasets and/or develop computational approaches that investigate the cognitive and brain mechanisms that support social perception and interaction.
  • Take a leading role in embracing and developing research practices that are in line with open science principles and the reform agenda from the credibility revolution.

About You

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in embracing and developing research practices that are in line with open science principles and the reform agenda from the credibility revolution. Using these methods, the successful candidate will be expected to develop a theme of research that examines how neural circuits in the human brain make sense of the dynamic and complex social information that we experience in everyday life. Example research topics include: person perception, social learning, loneliness, real-life neuroscience and open science. Applicants with research interests in other areas of social and cognitive neuroscience are also strongly encouraged to apply.

By the time of employment, the successful applicant will have completed a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience or a related discipline and meet the criteria listed below.

About Us

The project is part of ongoing research in the Social Brain in Action Laboratory (SoBA Lab), which explores the cognitive and brain systems that underpin our ability to understand the actions and mental states of other people. The SoBA Lab is an international research group housed in the Departments of Psychology and Cognitive Science at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia), which offers access to outstanding facilities for Social / Cognitive Neuroscience. For more information on our research, please see our website: www.soba-lab.com.

The Departments of Psychology and Cognitive Science at Macquarie have an exceptional record in research, scholarship, teaching and community service and is ranked among the top institutions in the world.  Both departments have a unique hands-on approach that is renowned for the breadth and diversity of areas included in the curriculum, the range of methodologies used, a commitment to academic as well as professional programs and an emphasis on fundamental and applied research.

To Apply

To be considered for this position, please apply online by submitting your CV, a relevant or representative peer-review publication or preprint, a research proposal for a project that you would run in my lab (max. 1000 words), and a separate cover letter that demonstrates how you meet the following selection criteria:

Essential

  • PhD in cognitive neuroscience or related research disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience with human neuroscience techniques, such as fMRI, TMS, M/EEG or fNIRS.
  • Proven strong programming skills (e.g., R, Matlab, Python languages).
  • Evidenced strong statistical skills, such as experience with linear mixed-effects models (multi-level models).
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A clear commitment to the open science movement and credibility revolution.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and a capacity to drive research projects independently.
  • Proven collaborative attitude towards team-based research projects.
  • A commitment to ‘slow science’ - an approach to science that values careful and considered research practices over work that is focussed on generating and counting publications.

Desirable

- Experience of computational approaches to social and cognitive neuroscience

- Experience with the collection and analysis of motion-tracking and eye-tracking data

- Experience with atypical groups or patients
