Postdoctoral Researcher in Cognitive Neuroscience
University of Helsinki, Department of Psychology and Logopedics

The Faculty of Medicine promotes scientific research of a high standard and is responsible for providing research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics, as well as for the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine. In addition to its teaching and research activities, the Faculty serves as a significant expert organisation in the healthcare sector and contributes to the discourse on ethics in the field. In terms of research, the Faculty aims for a place among the best medical faculties in the world, while consolidating and strengthening its status as a top-level institution of medical education.

Together with the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) and the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE), the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, constitutes the Academic Medical Center Helsinki (AMCH). This medical center has been very successful in international comparisons, ranking among the top 10 medical campuses in Europe and among the top 50 globally.

The O’BRAIN Lab of Prof. Annette Horstmann at the Department of Psychology and Logopedics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, invites applications for a

Postdoctoral Researcher in Cognitive Neuroscience

for a full-time position prospectively starting in late summer/autumn 2019. The position is initially for 2 years with possible extension.

Responsibilities/Field of research

The postdoctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team on projects investigating the link between cognition, brain function, and nutrition in humans.

In the O'BRAIN Lab ( we assume that individual eating behaviour is the result of the complex interaction of various factors, such as individual neurocognitive characteristics (e.g. in behavioural control, reinforcement learning, decision making), the environment (e.g. composition of diet, food supply) and individual predisposition (e.g. dopaminergic homeostasis, genetic susceptibility). Our goal is to unravel these interactions to further our understanding and to enable the identification of possible intervention and prevention targets. Our lab draws on expertise from various scientific disciplines such as neurobiology, psychology, cognitive science, mathematics and medicine. The methods we use include (functional) MRI, EEG, sophisticated cognitive tasks, eye tracking, and peripheral physiological measurements. The group works closely with the Max Planck Institute for Cognitive and Neurosciences in Leipzig and the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig, Germany.

Possible focus areas of the postdoctoral researcher include (maladaptive) plasticity of behavioural control, neurofeedback within the dopaminergic system, or the role of learning mechanisms in health behaviour to name but a few.

What we are looking for
We are looking for an enthusiastic, talented, and committed postdoctoral researcher with a promising track record and prior experience with human neuroscience methods (e.g. fMRI, EEG, or MEG). The successful candidate is able to work independently and self-organised, yet enjoys teamwork and scientific communication.
The applicant is expected to possess a PhD degree in cognitive science, experimental psychology, systems neuroscience or an adjacent field by the time of appointment. The position requires experience in experimental design, strong computational skills, a sound knowledge of statistics, programming experience in a relevant language (e.g. MATLAB, Octave, R, Python), and good communication skills in written and spoken English. Prior experience with computational modelling, TMS, tDCS, tACS, peripheral nerve stimulation, or neurofeedback are considered an advantage.

The applicant can expect an open, supportive, and collaborative environment within an interdisciplinary team. The University of Helsinki provides access to state-of-the-art imaging facilities such as the Advanced Magnetic Imaging Center at Aalto University School of Science hosting a 3T MR scanner, as well as the BioMag laboratory hosting MEG, NIRS and TMS systems. There will be opportunities for teaching and supervision at master and graduate level as well as for the development of an own research profile.

Details of employment
The position is initially available for 2 years, with a possible extension. The start date is flexible and is expected to be in late summer or autumn of 2019.
The salary of the successful candidate will depend on level 5 of the requirement level for teaching and research staff in the Finnish university salary system. In addition, the appointee will receive a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary is between € 2,903 and € 3,803 per month, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience. A six-month probationary period will be applied.

Instructions for application
The application should be written in English and include the following documents as a single pdf file:
(1) A cover letter (max. 2 pages), detailing the applicant’s motivation and a concise statement of research interests and background
(2) A CV, including list of publications and conference contributions
(3) Letter(s) of recommendation and the names or contact details of at least two references
(4) Two key publications
