Postdoctoral Researcher in medicine: Neuroimaging in neurodegenerative diseases
Karolinska Institutet, NVS

Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division of Clinical Geriatric conducts research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. The research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies. The activities are multidisciplinary and include medical research and research in the specialty engines psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nursing. We have a close cooperation with the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge.

The postdoc to be hired will be working in the research group of Associate Professor Eric Westman which is localized within the division of clinical geriatrics in the Neo building at KI Campus Huddinge. The focus of the research group has long been on different imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) and its applications in neurodegenerative disorders. The postdoc will work in many different projects related to healthy ageing and dementia, always with as strong focus on neuroimaging and cognition.

A major task for the applicant will be to contribute to the ongoing research activities at the division of clinical geriatrics, conceptually as well as methodologically. In particular, the person is expected to take an active role in our imaging work, applying advanced automated imaging methods. Further, there are possibilities to initiate individual research projects, based on the person´s interests.

The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency and be able to work in a team and be willing to supervise students. Moreover, the candidate is expected to have broad knowledge and expertise in aging research and dementia, data gathering and analysis as well as manuscript and grant preparation. Participating with coordination of projects within the division and writing grant applications are also duties included as part of the position.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. The candidate should have expertise in neuroimaging analysis, comprising magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or positron emission tomography (PET), in neurodegenerative disorders, especially dementia disorders. Experience in analyzing several MRI modalities is such as sMRI, DTI, MRS and fMRI is important. The successful applicant will have a good scientific record confirming the ability to conduct high quality peer reviewed research.

A merit is experience of research in an international environment, preferably outside the university at which the training for PhD/corresponding was obtained as well as novelty of the scientific approach, giving added value to the existing research at the faculty within the field. Social and collaborative skills are very important since the applicant will be working in a group. Good knowledge of both spoken and written English is required.
