Postdoctoral Researcher on the intergenerational transmission of parenting processes (0.8 FTE) Utrecht University Department of Education and Pedagogical Science Netherlands

Postdoctoral Researcher on the intergenerational transmission of parenting processes (0.8 FTE)

Job description

The Department of Education and Pedagogical Science, division Youth and Family, has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher on the project The intergenerational transmission of parenting processes. The postdoc project is embedded within the research Consortium on Individual Development that is funded by an NWO Gravitation grant. The postdoc project will use data from the RADAR cohort study. This cohort study is a comprehensive, longterm longitudinal study that focuses on development and relationships in adolescence and young adulthood, with a special focus on the intergenerational transmission of relational and psychosocial functioning.

Using longitudinal multimethod and multi-informant data across three generations from the RADAR study, the current project will examine intergenerational transmission of parenting processes.

Evidence suggests that parenting is transmitted across generations, yet how and for whom parenting is transmitted is not clear. Different theoretical perspectives might explain intergenerational transmission in parenting. According to social learning theory, transmission goes through a process of modeling, in which adolescents observe their parents’ parenting attempts and imitate those behaviors in their own parenting. Experiencing parenting is also likely to influence adolescents’ internal working models of relationships, which could then have consequences for their own parenting.

The project will focus on intergenerational transmission using longitudinal questionnaire and observational measures of parenting and parent-child relationship quality across three generations. It will examine whether the variation in parenting of generation 3 depends on generation 2 parents’ previous experiences as a child as reported by themselves as well as by their parents (G1), and through which mechanisms this transmission occurs. Particular attention will be given to social competence and behavioral control as mediators of transmission. Importantly, the project will also examine the conditions under which parenting is not transmitted from one generation to another.
