Position Description [Purpose and Scope]:

The Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences of the Keck School of Medicine of USC is seeking an experienced Behavioral Health Coordinator  (BHC) to serve in our USC Student Health practice. The (BHC) will facilitate the development of an integrated care model between primary care and behavioral health providers. The BHC will provide brief screening and treatment within the primary care environment for commonly occurring mental and behavioral health concerns that may include sleep disturbance, substance use, depression, anxiety, pain, chronic disease management, crisis evaluation, and sexual health concerns. The BHC will provide assessment and referral of students presenting in the primary care setting with mental health crises. The BHC program will integrate physical and mental health services in order to promote whole-person wellness. The BHC will facilitate increased access to mental health care, reduced stigma around seeking services, promotion of student self-management of disease and illness, enhanced inter-professional collaboration between medical and mental health providers, and facilitation of student engagement in specialty mental health care when indicated. The ideal candidate will have expertise in ambulatory Primary Care and knowledge of the characteristics and health needs of a university population. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate a commitment to interprofessional practice, cultural competence, and quality improvement.  

Description of USC Student Health:

USC Student Health provides a comprehensive campus health program including mental health services, medical services, prevention and health promotion, health communications, the student health insurance plan, and public health services to improve the health of the USC population. Mental health services support students so that they may achieve their academic and personal goals through the Department of Psychiatry’s Counseling and Mental Health Division (CMH). CMH services include: individual, couples and group counseling; assessment and referral to other professionals and institutions; crisis intervention (including some after-hours coverage); biofeedback; psychiatric evaluations and medication follow-up; consultation; outreach and prevention; and training and supervision. Services at CMH are provided by and under the auspices of the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences of the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Director of CMH or their designee
  • Comply with productivity expectations, as determined by the Director of CMH in consultation with Director of Medical Services
  • In a fast-paced primary care setting: provide assessment, consultation, and intervention for  concerns and/or disorders
  • Assess needs of primary care providers related to behavioral health services
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals to specialty care, traditional counseling services, campus services, community services and/or providers
  • Provide effective treatment planning and assist clients in successfully achieving goals
  • Evaluate crisis situations and apply appropriate interventions
  • Provide walk-in behavioral health services as needed
  • Provide Saturday coverage and after-hours on-call service as assigned
  • Actively participate in meetings that support the University Health Service’s collaborative health care model to provide collaborative care for students
  • Compile or develop educational materials to support effective brief interventions
  • Serve as liaison between USC Student Health’s Medical services and Counseling and Mental Health services
  • Serve the needs of the health systems under the Department of Psychiatry’s purview, including serving different divisions/services and patient populations (i.e. non-students), when needed/requested, based on service need and/or patient volumes
  • Supervise students, interns, and post-doctoral fellows delivering behavioral health services

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Counseling; or Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology
  • Licensed in the state of California
  • Experience in or demonstrable working knowledge of BHC care model
  • Ability to work through brief patient contacts as well as to make quick and accurate clinical assessments of behavioral conditions
  • Multicultural competency in working with students of color, students from all economic classes, first generation students, LGBTQ students, and international students
  • Working knowledge of behavioral medicine and evidence-based treatments for mental health conditions
  • Self-aware and can thrive in a fast-paced environment

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in development of additional knowledge of behavioral interventions related to medical conditions
  • Ability to adapt to pace of primary care
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience working with transitional age young
  • Strong communication skills, including consistent follow up with medical providers
  • Experience and commitment to working with minoritized individuals
  • Commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice and to professional integrity 
  • Desire to continue to grow as a professional and committed to excellence and lifelong learning
  • Bilingual or multilingual

This is an exempt faculty position in the Division of Student Health in the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. The position is full-time. Salary is competitive, and contingent on experience. A generous benefits package includes health insurance, sick time, paid vacation, and professional days.
