Research Assistant in Psychology Rochester Institute of Technology, Department of Psychology

This position is at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) within the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID). RIT is a privately endowed, coeducational university emphasizing career education and experiential learning. The RIT student body consists of 15,400 undergraduate and 3,200 graduate students. RIT is an internationally recognized leader in preparing deaf and hard-of-hearing students for successful careers in professional and technical fields. The university provides unparalleled access and support services for the more than 1,200 deaf and hard-of-hearing students who live, study, and work with hearing students on the RIT campus. 

NTID is one of the nine colleges at RIT. NTID's primary mission is to provide deaf and hard-of-hearing students with outstanding state-of-the-art technical and professional education programs that prepare them to live and work in the mainstream of a rapidly changing global community and enhance their lifelong learning.

This position is specifically within the NTID Center on Cognition and Language (NCCL), formerly the Deaf Studies Lab. NCCL investigates cognitive, language, and social aspects of the Deaf Experience. The research aim is to bring awareness to issues concerning the education and quality of life of deaf individuals. NCCL aims to bring more deaf individuals into a variety of fields of research in an American Sign Language-based, student-centered environment. NCCL proudly collaborates with many universities and centers nationally and internationally and receives federal funding for its research.
This is a 12-month, three-year Research Assistant Professor position, non-tenure track, renewable annually for up to three years, at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The Research Associate Professor will have an appointment in the Department of American Sign Language and Interpreter Education and will report to the Director of the NTID Center on Cognition and Language.

The Research Assistant Professor will be responsible for leading NTIDs efforts in increasing the number of American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency measures to be used to evaluate faculty and staff sign language skills. This includes developing new measures, testing the psychometric properties of the measures, developing a normative database, and assisting with the implementation of these tests to be used for tenure and promotion purposes.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position leads and supports the implementation of new sign language proficiency assessment measures at NTID. Specifics of yearly responsibilities, goals, and objectives will be formalized through annual Plans-of-Work between the Research Assistant Professor and the Director of the NTID Center on Cognition and Language, in consultation with the NTID Office of the Associate Dean of Research and NTID Office of the President.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Evaluating the psychometrics of existing ASL measures for the appropriateness and feasibility for use at NTID.
  • Developing a new ASL Sentence Repetition Test appropriate for hearing individuals who learn ASL as a second language.
  • Developing a diagnostic test that successfully demonstrates the linguistics areas of ASL that faculty and staff have mastered and the areas that need improvement.

PROFESSIONAL and SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to further develop skills in research methods, statistics, data analysis, grant writing, and dissemination
  • Participate in local, regional, and/or national professional organization meetings as appropriate
  • See collaborations and maintain contact with national and international scientists who specialize in sign language assessment
  • Conduct scholarly activities in research, and publish in scholarly journals.
  • Seek grants and contracts through NIH, NSF, IES and the like, as principal investigator
  • Provide mentoring to deaf and hard of hearing students pursuing research careers including those in the Rochester Bridges to the Doctorate program and the Rochester Post-Doctoral Partnership program.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD or EdD in Linguistics, Psychology, Education, or related fields
  • Experience in sign language research
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language is required. Ability to communicate effectively with wide range of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
