PhD Student in Neurology Ghent University, Department of Neurology
DescriptionThe Department of Neurology and the Department of Electronics and Information Systems (ELIS) at Ghent University (Belgium) are seeking to fill two PhD positions in the preclinical epilepsy research and small animal functional imaging. The fellows will join a research project situated in the context of an interdisciplinary research partnership between the Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Neurophysiology, Neurobiology and Neuropsychology (LCEN3) and the Medical Image and Signal Processing (MEDISIP) research group (http://medisip.elis.ugent.be) on imaging and modulating abnormal brain networks in the epileptic rodent brain. The project is supervised by Prof. dr. Paul Boon (LCEN3) and Prof. dr. Christian Vanhove (MEDISIP).
This preclinical research project includes small animal functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), video-EEG monitoring, intracranial electrophysiology, signal analysis, deep brain stimulation (DBS), drug therapy, chemogenetics (DREADDs) and optogenetics in rodent models for epilepsy. Applicants should have a background in biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering and have a strong interest in the domain of animal research, electrophysiology and/or fMRI data analysis. Applicants should be collaborative dynamic persons who like to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. You should have a good knowledge of the English language and good communication skills (written and oral). You are willing to travel abroad for meetings and conferences. We offer access to several preclinical models for epilepsy research and several preclinical research techniques, including state-of-the-art in vivo neuroimaging techniques (small animal fMRI, µPET, µSPECT, µCT, optical imaging), stereotactic neurosurgery, in vivo and in vitro recording and neurostimulation techniques, optogenetics and chemogenetics. Both PhD positions will be open for four years and the starting date will be between October 2016 and February 2017. Interested candidates sh Job Information
