Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA) is Norway’s largest state University College, with approximately 17000 students and 2000 employees. The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of seven departments and offers study programmes on all levels, including PhD. The faculty has about 6000 students and nearly 600 members of staff.

Department of Behavioural Sciences har approximately 750 students and 60 employees. The department is represented at all three campi: Kjeller, Pilestredet and Sandvika.

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. research fellowship on Autism, Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioural science, at the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences. The Faculty of Health Sciences has two Ph.D. programmes, and this research fellowship is affiliated to the Ph.D. programme in Behaviour Analysis.

The fellowship period is three years without a teaching obligation/required duties. A period of four years with a 25% teaching obligation may also be relevant. This will be decided when the appointment is made.

About the research project

In this project, the interaction between factors relating to brain structure (primarily measured using fNIRS) and behavioural science in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) will be studied. The project will focus on how small children with ASD process social and sensory (non-social) stimuli compared with children with normal functioning. We will also study changes in processing after Early and Intensive Behavioural Intervention as well as changes in processing as a result of the establishment of certain verbal and social skills.

Qualifications

  • a master's degree (120 credits / ECTS) or equivalent education in which the applicant has: a master's degree with an average grade of B or higher for the course component a master's thesis awarded grade B or higher
  • an understanding of the basic biological principles for neuronal structure and activity in relation to sensory functions, behaviour and cognitive processes
  • a mastery of English, both orally and in writing
  • knowledge and experience of using statistics
  • knowledge and experience of neuroimaging
  • knowledge and experience of autism spectrum disorders
  • knowledge of behavioural science

Certified copies of diplomas and transcripts of grades must be attached (both for bachelor's and master's level); they must include the ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution.

Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition must be enclosed.
