The Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology (ICEA) seeks to employ a Postdoctoral Researcher in Cognitive Anthropology on a three-year fixed-term basis based at the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, Banbury Road, Oxford. This post has been created as part of an international project: “Ritual Modes: Divergent modes of ritual, social cohesion, prosociality, and conflict”. Funded by the European Research Council and directed by Professor Harvey Whitehouse, it brings together an interdisciplinary team of anthropologists, psychologists, biologists and evolutionary theorists. The major objectives are to: (1) examine the proximate, psychological mechanisms underlying divergent modes of ritual and cohesion; (2) explore the ritual dynamics of groups that face particularly challenging forms of intergroup conflict; (3) examine the ultimate functions of the divergent modes of ritual and cohesion in cultural group selection. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to work on the first objective. Your duties will include designing and implementing field and lab studies with the Project Director and team of researchers. You will also contribute to data analysis, writing up, presenting findings, and the writing of additional grant applications as required. You must have completed or be working toward a PhD in social psychology or a closely related discipline. You will have substantial experience in designing and conducting experiments, and strong qualitative analysis and quantitative statistical skills. A demonstrable interest in the literature on modes of religiosity together with strong organisational and communication skills is essential.
