The Department of Psychology, University of Alberta, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Cognitive Psychology (Text Processing), to commence July 1, 2017.

Candidates must have a PhD in Psychology or a closely related field (e.g. Computing Science or Linguistics), by the date of the appointment or shortly thereafter, and a superior teaching and relevant research and publication record. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. They should have an active program of research focused on language use that involves the formal quantitative analysis and/or computational modeling and/or experimental study of the effectiveness of texts (newspaper or journal articles, social media postings, blogs, speeches, conversations, public e-mails and text messages), possibly including quantification of, e.g. persuasiveness, readability, sentiment analysis, and/or comprehensibility. A focus on or interest on the use of text in pedagogy, leadership, and/or other communication contexts and/or an ability to use the research methodologies of cognitive neuroscience (fMRI, EEG, patient studies) would be an asset.

The successful candidate for each of these appointments may be considered as a nominee for one of four open Tier II CRC positions in the Faculty of Science, in cases where the appointment advances the strategic considerations of the Faculty of Science and the University of Alberta.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative and robust externally-funded research program and other activities relating to their research, regularly engage in relevant domestic and international research networks, supervise and mentor graduate students, and provide service to the Department, the Faculty, the University, as well as to professional and external communities. The successful candidate is expected to offer courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in psychology, and in their research area.
