The Department of Psychology, Institute of General Psychology, Biopsychology and
Methods of Psychology, Chair of Social and Clinical Neuroscience (Prof. Dr. Katharina
von Kriegstein) invites applications for two positions as
Research Associates / PhD students
(Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
with 50 % of the fulltime weekly hours. The positions are available at the next possible
date and initially limited to 3 years. A contract extension for a fourth year is possible. The
period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act
(Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The positions aim at obtaining further
academic qualification (i.e. PhD).
The main research goal of the two positions is to investigate behavioural and neuroscience
principles of voice and face perception in neurotypical populations as well as in populations
with developmental person identity recognition deficits (i.e. phonagnosia and
prosopagnosia). The positions are part of the Human Communication Research Group led by
Prof. Dr. Katharina von Kriegstein. The group is currently based at the Max Planck Institute
for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig (http://www.cbs.mpg.de/independentresearch-groups/human-communication)
and will be newly established by October 1st 2017
at the TU Dresden.
Tasks: The projects involve planning and conducting neuroscientific experiments, data
analysis, and presenting and publishing scientific results. One of the positions is planned to
work on projects related to a comprehensive neuroimaging and behavioural study on
developmental prosopagnosics. For the other position, there is flexibility on the exact nature
of the projects in terms of methods and specific topic, but a strong interest in mechanisms
of voice-identity, face-identity, and speech recognition would be ideal. For examples of our
work on these topics see von Kriegstein et al., 2008 PNAS; von Kriegstein et al., 2010 J of
Neuroscience; Roswandowitz et al., 2014 Current Biology. Teaching duties for each of the
positions according to DAVOHS. Teaching can be done in German or in English.
Requirements: university degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, medicine
or related fields; enthusiasm for the field of human communication; strong interest in
neuroscience and neuroscience methods. Experience with experimental methods of
cognitive neuroscience, such as DWI, EEG, psychophysics, programming, fMRI, TMS, and
high level of statistical skills are a plus.
The TU Dresden offers an excellent, interdisciplinary scientific environment. Research and
teaching will be carried out at the Department of Psychology of the TU Dresden, which
houses the Neuroimaging Centre (http://www.nic-tud.de). The centre is equipped with a
research-only 3-Tesla MRI machine, MRI-compatible eye tracking, EEG systems, and a
neurostimulation unit including neuronavigaton, TMS and tDCS devices. All experimental
facilities are supported by experienced physics and IT staff. For analyses with high
computational demands, there is access to the TU Dresden high-performance computing
clusters. There are also strong existing collaborations with the MPI-CBS in Leipzig involving
7Tesla-MRI, Connectome scanner, and MEG data acquisitions.
