Position Description: The University of Chicago Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS; mapss.uchicago.edu) invites applications for a Lecturer in Psychology. This is a full-time teaching position with a renewable three-year term beginning September 2018.
The MAPSS Lecturer will teach four graduate courses per year, one of which may be a section of the required MA core class "Perspectives in Social Science Analysis." The other graduate courses may be in any area of social or developmental psychology proposed by the Lecturer. Annual course assignments may vary, and will be determined in coordination with MAPSS leadership and the Department of Psychology; priority will be given to substantive or methodological courses that complement other offerings.
Other academic responsibilities will include:
Academic Advising - Advise MAPSS students on quarterly course selection - Lead a weekly MA Proposal Workshop in the Winter Quarter - Work with faculty in Psychology, Economics, Comparative Human Development, and other departments to secure and monitor laboratory placements and other faculty-mentored research opportunities for approximately 40-45 annual psychology concentrators in MAPSS - Serve as second reader on approximately 20 MA theses per year, including providing written thesis evaluations - Advise MAPSS students who are applying to PhD programs in psychology, including writing letters of recommendation
Program Administration - Participate in admissions and recruiting - Supervise and mentor advanced doctoral students serving as MAPSS Preceptors - Plan and attend required co-curricular activities for MAPSS students (academic conferences, career development, student advancement)
In addition, the Lecturer will have opportunity and support to pursue professional development activities that contribute to excellence in teaching and graduate student mentorship.
Prior teaching experience is required. Lecturers must have the PhD in hand by September 1, 2018.
