Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Faculty of Communication & Design [FCAD] at invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs. The successful candidate will be appointed for a five year term commencing July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will receive a course release and an administrative stipend for the period of this appointment.

The processes related to the recruitment and selection of the successful candidate are governed by the Policy and Procedures Relating to Search Committees and Appointments in the Academic Administration (the “AAA Policy”). Once in this position, the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs shall be an “associate member” of the RFA in accordance with the . 

In recognition of the under-representation of racialized  and Indigenous persons in academic administrative roles, the Faculty especially welcomes applications from racialized and Indigenous persons.

Under the direction of the Dean and in close collaboration with other Associate Deans and staff within the Office of the Dean, the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs will provide strategic leadership in the areas of:  

  • administration and procedures related to academic development and oversight of the undergraduate academic programs; 
  • addressing student concerns and overseeing student-related processes (appeals, etc.);
  • overseeing Periodic Program Reviews and curricular administration;
  • in conjunction with the Chairs, developing interdisciplinary curricular initiatives;
  • supporting faculty members and facilitating the development of mentorship opportunities in collaboration with the Associate Dean, Graduate Education and Associate Dean, SRC;
  • providing guidance to Chairs on faculty and student issues;
  • acting as a public relations ambassador for FCAD (e.g., attending events);
  • overseeing the management of awards;
  • acting as the Dean’s designate, as required; and
  • demonstrating an understanding of, and fostering a commitment to, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) as it pertains to service, teaching, and research including creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment for a diverse student population. 

The successful candidate will be a tenured faculty member in FCAD who holds a terminal degree and demonstrates excellence in teaching, SRC and service activities and will further present evidence of: 

  • an ability to be a visionary, empathetic and collaborative leader with superior organizational and people skills;
  • experience or demonstrable capacity in managing a large portfolio of academic administrative matters; 
  • an understanding of student engagement and experience with student conflict resolution;  a commitment to student’s personal, academic and professional success; 
  • experience in curriculum design and implementation;
  • familiarity with pedagogical practices, SRC, and operational issues in the University; 
  • a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) including an understanding of EDI principles and evidence of application of those principles, or clearly defined plans of how EDI principles will be applied and promoted in research and teaching; 
  • a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning;
  • ability and willingness to work effectively in a team-oriented, unionized environment and to assume and maintain a broad perspective that is inclusive of the diverse units within the Faculty.

Ryerson’s Faculty of Communication and Design is a national leader in the provision of educational programs in media, applied communication, design, and the fine and performing arts.
