The Medical Faculty of the University of Bern in collaboration with the Inselspital (Bern University Hospital), Switzerland offers an
Open Rank Professorship in Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases (Tenure Track Assistant Professorship or Extraordinariate)
as of 01.01.2023 or by agreement.
The Department of Neurology at the University of Bern, Switzerland, is internationally renowned for its innovations in clinical and scientific research. This professorship should strengthen clinic-related or clinical research on neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on dementias.
This position is located in a scientifically strong research environment with corresponding expertise and infrastructure in neurology (systems physiology, sleep research, neuroimmunology, NeuroTec and neurovascular research). These are complemented by geriatric psychiatry, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine and the ARTORG Centre, as well as the BioBank Bern. A methodologically complementary approach to this scientific environment is supported. The focus of the Professorship will be biomarker-based research in samples (liquid/omics), clinical data (clinical/behavioural) or using digital biomarkers (e.g. MRI, nuclear medical imaging, neurophysiological, wearables). A dual affiliation, with for example geriatric psychiatry or neuroradiology, is possible depending on the research focus.
We are looking for an excellent researcher with a PhD, MD or MD PhD background with high technical and scientific competence in dementia research, who is willing to cooperate in an interdisciplinary team. A clinical care assignment may go together with the position, but this is not a prerequisite. In particular, a strong international network and the successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding is essential. Academic teaching is an important mission at the medical faculty and the candidate should make a significant contribution to this mission. A commitment to teaching, as attested by a corresponding teaching portfolio in this field, is desirable. German language skills are required in the medium term. Proven management and leadership experience, with administrative skills as well as the ability to integrate oneself into existing structures, are important elements. Habilitation or an equivalent academic research output is expected.
