Faculty of Science, Department of Psychology

Bewerbungsfrist: 15.03.2024

The Department Psychology at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen invites applications for the following position within Project A4: Executive functions: Are amodal representations involved in proactive control? [PIs: Markus Janczyk / Hartmut Leuthold / Carolin Dudschig] as part of the DFG Research Unit “Modal und Amodal Cognition: Functions and Interactions”

1 Post-Doc-Position (m/f/d, E13 TV-L ; 100%)

Employment is envisaged from 1st of May 2024 to 31st August 2027.

The research unit deals with the question of how the human mind represents the internal and external world. Central to this question is the distinction between modal vs. amodal representations. The research unit proceeds from the notion that both representations play a major role in all cognitive domains. The goal of the research unit is to unravel the functional roles of modal and amodal representations for cognition and to investigate their interactions in different subfields of psychology (i.e., perception, learning, language, thinking, action). Project A4 focuses on investigating a key feature of human cognition – i.e. cognitive control - in the action and language domain. Specifically, the role of stimulus, response, and task features for adjustments of information processing will be investigated via behavioral and electrophysiological markers (i.e. event-related brain potentials and oscillatory brain activity).

The successful candidate will plan and conduct scientific investigations into the above described issues, will analyze and interpret the results of the performed studies, will prepare and write up of manuscripts for publication, and will be involved in the development of follow-up studies. The candidate will be intensively supported by the research unit in establishing an independent research profile in cognitive and biological psychology.

What is required?

  • Excellent PhD in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science or Biology with a focus on investigating cognition.
  • High motivation and distinctive interest in research focusing on cognition
  • Very good skills in experimental methods (behavioral and/or human EEG/ERPs) and statistical analyses (e.g., R)
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, Matlab)
  • Experience with scientific publishing
  • Very good English skills

What we offer

  • Possibility to contribute to an innovative interdisciplinary research field.
  • A strong team of researchers who are highly interconnected both to each other and to other international researchers.
  • Possibility to collaborate with excellent research institutes, both nationally and internationally.
  • Strong support for building up a career as a researcher in cognitive psychology and related fields.
