Research Assistant / Associate in Neurotechnology
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate to design and fabricate electrocorticography systems using organic transistors in brain/computer interfacing.

Brain/Computer interfaces (BCIs) are being used for research purposes as well as in the clinic to diagnose different pathologies (epilepsy, Parkinson's, etc.) and provide treatment by means of electrical stimulation. A key challenge is the development of implantable probes with high performance. We have shown that organic transistors offer exceptionally high signal to noise ratio recordings due to local signal amplification. The aim of this project is to develop a BNC system using organic transistors.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

Developing a better understanding of OECT physics:

-Conducting charge transport and electrochemical experiments to understand limitations. -Use of device models to engineer optimal devices.

Applying OECTs to neural recordings:

-Developing an experimental platform for neural recordings using OECTs.

Planning and organising:

-Plan the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate. -Plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

  • Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD or equivalent in Materials Science and Engineering.
  • Knowledge and experience of experimental techniques in electrochemical properties of mixed organic conductors.
  • Ability to function within a large team, coordinate with multiple partners and communicate across disciplines.
  • PEDOT:PSS organic electrochemical transistors
  • Experience of managing own workload, sticking to deadlines and the ability to constantly update knowledge.
  • Strong publication record.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD or equivalent. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 November 2021 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
