Duties & Responsibilities

The Ginty laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School is looking for an independent, experienced, and highly motivated Research Assistant to assist in the study of the sensory innervation of the skin and the spinal cord. This project uses mouse genetics, molecular biology, electron microscopic and histological approaches to understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of touch and pain. The Research Assistant will work closely with lab members to learn techniques, and then independently to perform routine/non-routine techniques including histological staining, preparation of chemicals, mouse husbandry tasks, and electron microscopic imaging. The RA will assist in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, and protocols; process, organize and summarize data; and report experimental results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms. May include some unconventional work hours, such as nights and weekends, as well as travel between Boston and Cambridge. May process orders or invoices as needed.

Basic Qualifications

College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated competence in mouse work including husbandry and genotyping. Ability to perform, analyze and resolve technical issues related to mouse work. Must be able to work independently in the lab as well as under the direction of the lead investigator. Excellent communication skills. Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise others. Ability to work independently and display initiative to introduce innovations to the research study. Ability to identify problems and develop solutions. Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines. Functions with speed, precision and an understanding of the theory behind procedures.

This is a term position that ends on July 14, 2020, with strong potential for renewal.
