The College of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Assistant to apply professional knowledge, skills, and training to support the objectives of the laboratory by conducting experiments. This laboratory is focused on molecular, electrophysiological, and cognitive dysfunction in a rodent model of disease.  This position will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities.


Essential Function

Performs experiments and records data according to research protocols; Responsible for successfully completing assigned tasks independently; Applies research principles for less complex assignments; Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments; Assists in daily operations of the laboratory including maintaining lab supplies, organization, and cleanliness; Serves as a developing level Research Assistant.


Primary Duties

  • Performing behavioral testing of rodents, including acquisition and compilation of data
  • Monitoring animal health and maintaining animal health logs
  • Performing animal electrophysiological experiments
  • Performing molecular and cellular assays on animal derived samples
  • Histological sectioning and immunohistochemically processing of fixed samples
  • Performing some statistical and graphical analysis of data
  • Interpreting data and assisting in judging validity of data
  • Attending meetings that support the progress and objectives of the laboratory
  • Studies may require some evening or weekend hours
  • Contribution to abstracts and manuscripts (with authorship opportunities available)
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements:   Bachelor degree in a profession/field , or equivalent level of knowledge.  Applicants with a B.A. or B.S. degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, or related field will be given preference.


Preferred Qualifications:   Master degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, or related field, or equivalent level of knowledge; Experience in performing molecular, histological and/or electrophysiological assays; Experience working with rodents




This job requires an understanding of research fundamentals and the interest and ability to learn, work in teams, and work on pieces of projects/studies. The successful applicant will possess skills including using time efficiently and productively, strong organizational skills, ability to follow instruction, and ability to work independently with supervision. A strong work ethic and enthusiasm for scientific method is necessary. Prior experience in a biology/neuroscience laboratory is useful, but not required.



This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.
