The School of Psychology is one of the largest and most prestigious schools in Australia. The School is located in the Faculty of Science and has approximately 50 full time members of academic staff, 15 general staff and an operating budget of over $12M.

The Research Assistant will assist in the design, management and execution of the research project entitled: “Determining the physical and temporal properties of a person's inner speech” in accordance with the funding agreement with the Australian Research Council Discovery Project.

About the role

  • $77k - $87k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 6 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to Professor Thomas Whitford and Professor Mike Le Pelley and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Collect electroencephalographic (EEG) data for experiments conducted as part of the Australian Research Council Discovery Project
  • Process and analyse the collected EEG data using appropriate analysis software
  • Conduct statistical analysis of the collected data using appropriate statistical software
  • Maintain laboratory record of experimental protocols and assistance in the day to day running of the laboratory, including ordering consumables and managing experimental schedules.
  • Assist with the preparation of manuscripts based on experiments conducted, including assisting with literature reviews.
  • Assist in the presentation of research results from experiments conducted as required
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health & safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A degree in Psychology, or previous experience in the design and implementation of psychological research.
  • Demonstrated experience in EEG data collection and analysis (desirable)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
