Research Assistant in Risk and Evidence Communication
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

Applications are invited for two Research Assistant posts to join the team of psychologists, communication experts and software engineers at the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication.

The Research Assistants will help with all aspects of the Winton Centre's work, which spans many disciplines, but are likely to be particularly involved in research into the communication of uncertainty, quality of evidence and numbers in healthcare and national statistics. We are looking for two people with complementary skills but both will be expected to be able to help prepare and carry out both qualitative work, interviewing a wide range of potential stakeholders, and to be proficient in quantitative methods, likely using R. The post holders will also be expected to be able to help code up questionnaires for online work (eg. using Qualtrics). There may well be the opportunity to contribute to the design of experiments and the writing of scientific papers. However, the main focus of the Centre's work is always to understand the needs of communicators and audiences and hence serve them, rather than to further academic research or publish academic papers.

Applicants are expected to have either an excellent undergraduate degree in Psychology, behavioural science, or a closely related discipline, or to be able to demonstrate why their experience makes them an excellent candidate for the job. An ideal candidate would have demonstrable experience of reviewing, conducting, analysing, and interpreting studies involving a variety of (human) participants. This should include working independently to prepare experimental tasks, recruiting for and carrying out heterogeneous participant samples, and using a range of statistical techniques for data analysis. High levels of motivation and organization will be necessary. The team is working entirely virtually at the moment, but when lockdown ends, the postholders should be prepared to be located in Cambridge.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 August 2022, to begin in July or August 2021.
