Applications are invited for the above post based in the Scottish Section of the University of Nottingham’s Hearing Sciences department, located in Glasgow.

This is a thriving centre of research into how people use their hearing, how hearing impairment affects them, and how new technologies might help. This postdoc position will contribute to our work on conversation behaviour within our MRC programme grant on communication ecology (e.g., Hadley, Brimijoin, & Whitmer, 2019; Hadley, Whitmer, Brimijoin, & Naylor, 2020). Duties will include setting up, running, analysing, and reporting experiments studying how people communicate effectively in different contexts (e.g., in different sound environments, or across different media). Some studies will investigate communication behaviour over videoconferencing software, which will provide opportunities for the post-holder to develop new paradigms and analysis techniques, while others will address face-to-face behaviour in the lab, giving the post-holder opportunities to work with and integrate diverse sensor and stimulus presentation systems (e.g., motion tracking, eye tracking, and audio recording). This post will be highly collaborative, and will involve supporting other researchers and students working on relevant projects. In sum, this position offers the potential to develop new methods and work with a variety of techniques, as well as gaining experience of supporting student projects.

Candidates must have a PhD (or be near completion) or equivalent experience in cognitive psychology/engineering/computer science or any relevant field. As the postholder will be involved in developing new platforms to investigate conversation behaviour over videoconferencing software, they should have strong programming skills and, ideally, experience analysing movement or video recordings using computational methods. Experience integrating hardware and software for diverse data measurement would also be desirable, given the multi-measurement recordings in the lab-based studies. Finally, they should also have a positive attitude to working with others. Additional essential and desirable criteria are listed in the Role Profile.

This post is full-time and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2022. The post is full-time (36.25 hours per week), however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Graham Naylor: Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
