Role Description

Department

The Department of Psychology at the University of York is seeking a full-time Research Associate to work on a new project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, awarded to Dr Angela de Bruin in collaboration with Dr Danijela Trenkic (Department of Education, University of York) and Dr Cong Liu (Qingdao University, China). The aim of the project is to understand how daily-life language experiences and interactional contexts shape bilingual language control.  To examine this, the project focuses on international students who moved from China to York. These students will be tested longitudinally throughout their first year in the UK. They will also be compared to a control group of students in China. We will study how bilingual language control during production and comprehension is shaped by (changes in) language environment and daily-life language experiences. We will also examine how mechanisms underlying language control might depend on the task and context (e.g., contexts requiring use of one specific language or contexts allowing for free switching).

Role

You would lead the longitudinal study on international students in York, working closely together with Dr Angela de Bruin and Dr Danijela Trenkic. Your responsibilities include setting up and managing the longitudinal project, recruiting participants, training Mandarin-English speaking research assistants, (supervising) data collection, data preprocessing and analysis, and disseminating the results through publications, conference presentations, and public engagement activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged. The position is for 21 months and would start in December 2021.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • You must have a PhD and first degree in Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Neuroscience, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of experimental psychology and of psycholinguistic research on bilingual production and comprehension are essential, with knowledge of research on bilingual language control and/or individual differences between bilinguals desirable.
  • You will need strong communication skills, with the ability to write up and present research to a high standard. You will need strengths in individual and collaborative research skills and in the use of statistical packages to analyse complex datasets. The ability to programme experiments in e.g., PsychoPy, to analyse data in R, and to use linear mixed-effects analyses are desirable.
  • You should have experience of independent and collaborative research and of writing up research for publication. You should have experience working independently and as part of a team. Experience of language research, of supervising other team members, of managing large-scale projects, and of implementing open science practices are desirable.
  • You should have good attention to detail, commitment to high quality, a collaborative ethos, and enthusiasm for the research area and project. You should have a positive attitude to, and willingness to work with, colleagues and students both in York and in other institutes. You should have strong planning ability, an ability to meet deadlines, and a commitment to acquiring new knowledge and skills.

Interview date: Monday 5 July 2021
