Role Description

Psychology

We are seeking a Research Associate to contribute to a 3-year CRUK and EPSRC-funded project in the area of visual perception, image analytics and complex cognitive processing. You will be based at the Department of Psychology at the University of York but will be part of an international and interdisciplinary team involving researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre, USA and the York Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.

You will work full time for a fixed term up to 3 years on an exciting interdisciplinary project on the intersection of cognitive science, computer science and medical image perception entitled:’ Understanding the Global Gist Signal as a Risk Marker for Early Cancer Detection.’ The project aims to understand the signal used in rapid visual perception of the broad meaning of the ‘gist” of a scene and establish how it might be exploited as a perceptual ‘risk factor’ and early sign of cancer in radiology. We intend to use image-analysis and pattern-recognition capabilities provided by deep convolutional neuronal networks (CNN) and machine learning. Our goal is to demonstrate that the global gist signal can be learned and used to train experts, to refine screening protocols for individual patients, and to inform and refine the capabilities of computer-based detection systems.

Role

The project requires that you collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and other members of the lab, but we also encourage you to lead your own projects. You will be 1) expected to take the lead on computational and image analysis part that is essential to the project; 2) conduct research that includes designing, and programming experiments, analysis and interpretation of research data using appropriate research techniques and methods; 3) take lead on relevant publications and conference presentations, as well as contribute to preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies.

You will be expected to have a track record of publications in the top venues in your field. For example, if your background is in computer vision, we would expect to see publications in IEEE T-PAMI, IJCV, CVPR, ICCV or similar.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A PhD degree in Cognitive Science, Psychology, Computer Science (Computer Vision or Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence) or Neuroscience.
  • Highly developed programming skills in languages such as Matlab, Python or C/C++, HTML/JavaScript
  • Expertise in image analytics.
  • Experience in machine learning and with deep learning and ability develop and train models from scratch, and evaluation methods.
  • Experience in psychophysics (including programming psychophysical experiments), cognitive sciences, and/or visual perception is highly desirable.
  • Ability/experience in working both individually and collaboratively and writing up, presenting and publishing work in top venues

Interview date: TBC
